Welcome!

Welcome to the Yellow Belt DevOps Dojo Running a Value Stream Mapping Workshop module.

Purpose

The primary objective of the Running a Value Stream Mapping Workshop module is to help you to understand how to setup and conduct a Value Stream Mapping (VSM) workshop. This will allow you and your team to select a stream, to document both the current state and the desired state of the selected stream in the form of Value Stream Maps and to initiate a process to address any identified deltas between current and desired state.

The secondary objective is to give you an opportunity to participate in a Running a Value Stream Mapping Workshop scenario using Katacoda.

If you have not completed the Value Stream Mapping and the DevOps Kaizen modules of Yellow Belt DevOps Dojo Stripe 1 and the Welcome module of Yellow Belt DevOps Dojo Stripe 2, then you should do so before continuing with the Running a Value Stream Mapping Workshop module.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the module you will be able to:

  • Give an overview of VSM.

  • Set the scope of a VSM workshop.

  • Select and engage the participants needed for a successful VSM workshop.

  • Conduct a VSM workshop either Face to Face (F2F) or Virtually.

  • Document current and desired state of the selected stream using VSM.

  • Ensure the metrics needed to make data driven decisions are captured.

  • Understand how to record information flows in a VSM.

  • Use VSM to help identify the improvements that can deliver the greatest business value.

  • Establish a Kaizen (continuous improvement) cycle to address the deltas between current and desired state VSMs.

Conclusion

Congratulations, you have completed the Running a Value Stream Mapping Workshop module of the Yellow Belt DevOps Dojo Stripe 2

Hopefully you have enjoyed this module and are already thinking about the value streams to be mapped.

If so issue the call to arms, gather the troops and start mapping.

Spreading the news

Pet Clinic's DevOps transformation is starting to deliver results including

  • Improvements in the development team's culture, process and tooling

  • Requested features being made available sooner to the business

  • Increases in quality and operability of the business features deployed

  • Stronger links between business and IT teams

  • Improved experiences for customers with a resulting increase in customer satisfaction

The transformation underway in the Pet Clinic has not gone un-noticed. Charlie the CEO of the Universal Imports group of companies having sponsored the pilot is keen to see the learnings applied in the other companies in the Universal Imports group. He expects to see similar positive results in those companies.

Charlie calls a meeting inviting Paulo, Brenda, Santhosh and Chun from the Pet Clinic transformation team 🐱🐶🐉🐭🐹🐰, Adriana an Architect from Ingen the group's Space Exploration Company 🌍🚀✨🚀💫🚀💥🚀🌍 and Pennyworth a Project Manager from The Daily Mentioner the group's national newspaper 📰📰📰.

The purpose of the meeting is to brief Adriana and Pennyworth on the Pet Clinic transformation with a view to having them champion similar transformation efforts in Ingen and The Daily Mentioner respectively.

One of the main outcomes from the meeting was the general agreement of the Pet Clinic team of the important role VSM played in the transformation.

VSM was used to apply Lean principles to a relatively complex development environment. With Chun's coaching, VSM enabled the Pet Clinic team to document, analyze, and improve the processes involved in the delivery of the Pet Clinic application for the teams' customers in the business. VSM helped the Pet Clinic team to identify and eliminate waste in their processes.

Adriana and Pennyworth, having heard from Paulo, Brenda and Santhosh of the benefits accruing from the Pet Clinic transformation are keen to leverage some of the learnings, both positive and negative, from it but request some help getting started with VSM.

Paulo assures them the Pet Clinic team had similar challenges when they started their transformation. He recommends that Chun run a workshop on VSM for a few key stakeholders from Ingen and The Daily Mentioner to help kick start their respective DevOps transformations.

Charlie, excited about the potential synergies across the Universal Imports group, agrees to sponsor the workshop.

This is Running a Value Stream Mapping Workshop and these are the people that will participate from the Pet Clinic, Ingen and the Daily Mentioner companies of the Universal Imports Group.
