What is Bash?

Bash (Bourne Again SHell) is one of many shells. A Shell takes commands and covert those calls into system calls used by the Operating System API.

Lets get started by looking at what we can do with bash.

We've learned how to use bash to find out

  • who we are
  • where we are
  • how to navigate around a directory
  • how to create a new directory
  • delete a directory

Up next we'll be looking into ways we can manage files.

Check bash version

Lets check that we have access to bash by checking the version that we're running:

bash --version

GNU bash, version 4.3.11(1)-release (x86_64-pc-linux-gnu)
Copyright (C) 2013 Free Software Foundation, Inc.
License GPLv3+: GNU GPL version 3 or later <http://gnu.org/licenses/gpl.html>

This is free software; you are free to change and redistribute it.

We can see the version that we're running and we're ready to go to the next step!
